I find the 30 days prior to the World Junior Championships to be the most unsettling of times.
First off, you'd like to see the tournament start and get all the talk of who will make Team Canada and just who exactly is on Team USA to be over. I'm not a big fan of all the speculation over teenagers; I just want to see the games. For me, the whole nationalistic aspect of the tournament, which begins Dec. 26 in Saskatoon and Regina, leaves me cold.
Do I feel better if the United States beats Canada or Russia? Perhaps, but not enough to say that is the reason for tuning in to the games on the NHL Network. Give me the chance to see the future stars of the NHL, or for that matter, the stars who I will see again in the Olympics because they are going to the KHL or the other top leagues in Europe.
But as you will see in notebooks and roundups in the next 30 days, who will make Canada's junior team will sneak its way into any number of reports. Here is the always noteworthy report from Sportsnet.ca's Patrick King, who mentions that Philippe Cornet of Rouyn-Noranda is turning heads as Canada's selection process heats up.
He and Shawinigan defenseman Charles-Olivier Roussel were selected as the players of the week in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

In other league news, Cape Breton left wing Ashton Bernard and Acadie-Bathurst left wing Marshall Worden drew 10-game suspensions for their fight during warmups on Friday night, a 3-0 victory by Acadie-Bathurst. It's important to note that the pregame bout did not earn both players the night off. In fact, they went at each other, among others, again during the game. Both players finished with 11 minutes in penalties. Worden was also assessed a misconduct.

Saturday's Junior Report
There was hockey everywhere you turned on Friday. I listened to four NHL games while at work, managed to listen to a few junior games while flipping the TV channels between NHL games (Rangers/Lightning and Flames/Red Wings) and the college games (Minnesota/Michigan, St. Cloud State/Denver, Ohio State/North Dakota).
In short, my Friday was spent around hockey, and what a treat it was. My eyes are still spinning, but my hearing is still working. And with the sound of that, here is the night in junior hockey.

The Junior Report: Russian Selects 0-for-4 Against CHL
Just a short Junior Report as the only action came in the Super Series involving the Russian Selects squad against player from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League and the Western Hockey League.
The Russian Selects, looking for their first victory in this six-game series, came away with another defeat on Monday night, losing by 5-2 to the OHL Selects in Windsor.
Goals by Adam Henrique, Tyler Toffoli, Taylor Hall and Nazem Kadri gave the OHL squad a 4-0 lead in the third period. Goals by Kirill Petrov (14:02) and Maxim Kitsyn (17:21) cut the OHL's lead to 4-2. Zack Kassian closed out the scoring for the OHL with a power-play goal at 18:31. (A complete recap is here.)
Plymouth goaltender Matt Hackett made 30 saves in the victory.
The series moves west to British Columbia, where the Russian Selects will face the WHL selects at 10 pm Eastern in Victoria. Game 6 is Thursday in Kelowna.

Hockey Salvation? It's on the Radio
Ever found yourself in the darkest part of the world, where boredom was the only thing you could count on and hope was something that stopped somewhere down at the other end of the block?
Music can help entice that hope closer to your doorstep. But if you are a hockey fan in an area not otherwise known for it's abundance of hockey, it was a little more difficult.
No longer.
Radio on the Web, if not satellite radio, delivers games from all over the continent. Early on a Sunday evening, nothing short of a substantial bribe can bring me to watch another episode of the tragicomedy known as the New York Jets.
I need hockey, and at this moment, my fix is coming from Atlanta, where the Trashers are playing host to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Generally, I rely on the Center Ice package (found either on cable or satellite TV) to get me through a long season. But some games just aren't televised. I didn't make the rules, but I need a second outlet when I cannot watch the game.
This is where radio on the Web comes in. Every game is there. Let me spell that out again. EVERY game.
Not that I want to jinx it -- and I am a big believer in the jinx -- but these games remain free on the Web (after you've paid for the computer and the Web access and the electricity).

Friday's Junior Report
The Russian selects squad of juniors touring Canada are 0 for 3 in the six-game series after a 5-2 loss to the Ontario Hockey League selects on Thursday night in Barrie. Jeff Skinner of the Kitchener Rangers scored twice on the power play.
Goals by Maxim Kitsyn and Maxim Karpov gave the Russian selects a 2-1 lead 5 minutes 44 seconds into the second period before Canada came back with goals by Taylor Beck (Guelph Storm) and Greg Nemisz (Windsor Spitfires) to lead the rest of the way. A full game story is here.
Game 4 of the series is Monday in Windsor. Games 5 and 6, featuring the Russian Selects and the Western Hockey League selects, will be next Wednesday and Thursday in British Columbia (Victoria and Kelowna). The box score is here.

Testing the Jukebox. Requests?
In a bar, good jukeboxes and hockey on the TV screen go together like Jack and a clean glass. When served in equally large amounts, you've got the room ready for action.
Back in the '80s, my friend Curt and I would drive across the frozen buggy trails of northern Indiana to watch the Blackhawks at Nick's Sports Page in Dolton, Ill. SportsChannel, with Pat Foley's voice cutting through the crowd noise with his call of "BANNNNN-ERRRRR-MAAAN!' to signal a big save, provided the game action and the jukebox gave people a beat to follow as they fought for position around the bar or to clear a path to the restrooms.
Here at Vic's Stereo Lounge, we need to start stocking the jukebox with favorites, of which I have many.
This song by Ann Peebles floats on the haze of a smoky room and makes you tap your toes, even when you can't feel them anymore. It's "I Can't Stand the Rain" with that Memphis sound from Stax Records, and we hope the lounge patrons will pick a few more just like it.
A reminder from Tom Cochrane and Red Rider to enjoy our time here. I've had all too many reminders recently as to how quickly the game plan can go south with a few unfortunate turns. Life comes at you hard and fast ... and then it's gone. So enjoy it with a passion, please.
This song is "Sleeping Sickness" from Colour and City. The CBC used it to capture and the pleasure and pain that was and always is playoff hockey. Listen closely and you can hear them talking about the holes in our game plan that pull us up from the pillow by our ears.
The images? Well, we always like the journey we take en route to the Cup being awarded, whether it's our team flashing the silver or, more likely, the other squad.
We here at the lounge remember the time before cable, when the TV stations actually went dark around closing time. But they always gave you the national anthem before going to the Indian head color test pattern.
For my money, young Nikki Yanofsky delivers the goods on both the "Star Spangled Banner" and "O Canada." And can you imagine what the lounge will sound like after they hear this and see that the next round and some wings are headed to the table?
Bring on the treats and drop the puck.

Thursday's Junior Report
Wednesday night had a little more action, with games in the Ontario and Western Hockey Leagues and a lone contest in the United States Hockey League.
Many people -- actually I'm not certain how many, but I read that there are many -- are anticipating the men's tournament at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, but that's not a pressing concern in this corner of the bar.
The world junior championships are the draw for me, and as we push past the midpoint of October, I and Pablo the hockey pug are getting ready for the tournament. As we get closer, we hope you will drop into the lounge for our thoughts on the WJC, and perhaps share a tip or two.
For now, we'll have to make do with the Canadian Hockey League's super series with the Russian Selects. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League swept their portion of the series with an 8-3 victory Wednesday night in Shawinigan.
Luke Adam of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles had a four-point night (two goals, two assists) to lead the QMJHL squad in the second game between these two teams. (Game 2 video highlights are here.)
The QMJHL defeated the Russian Selects by 3-1 on Monday night in Drummondville. (Video highlights are here.)
The Russian squad will now move on to face the Ontario Hockey League selects, with the first game of that series tonight in Barrie.

Shanahan Calls It Quits
Brendan Shanahan has officially retired from hockey, according to a report on TSN.ca.
Shanahan began his National Hockey League career with the New Jersey Devils, whom he returned to this September before leaving the team prior to the start of the season.
Shanahan would move on to play for the St. Louis Blues, Hartford Whalers, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers. He won three Stanley Cup championships with the Red Wings, and he will be remembered in this corner bar as much for his on-ice talent and determination as for his good humor during interviews.

The National Hockey League's central scouting service has released the fall rankings for teenage prospects who will discussed, downgraded, talked up and eventually selected at the 2010 draft.
Tyler Seguin of the Plymouth Whalers is ranked No. 1 for skaters from the Ontario Hockey League. Brandon Gormley of the Moncton Wildcats is the top player from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Brett Connolly of the Prince George Cougars leads the contingent from the Western Hockey League.

In a decade that now sits beyond the reach of my rear view mirror, there was a bar in San Francisco that advertised it was ready to serve drinks as soon as the first ball was served at Wimbledon.
The stench of urine was beginning to build along the blocks South of Market Street in the early morning light. There, a well dressed gentleman, a well-greased man of the streets and a young journalist fresh off the overnight shift could bend an elbow and discuss the news of the day and the sports being contested on the screen.
That was the life, and it is, we hope, the type of spirits we will serve here in the lounge. Getting here late is never a problem. We choose not to close, except for family matters, because our love for the selected sports/music/food on the menu never diminishes.
Besides, our dog, Pablo the hockey pug, likes guests. Just don't make him run you out. He's little and he's old, but the hockey pug still delivers a mean ankle check.
