Smoke Dances With Sunlight on the Bar

I'm enjoying a rare gift of spare time, alone with my keyboard, a chance to savor a good meal I've prepared, consumed and now stored in my culinary journal.

The lingering smoke from the frying of corn tortillas is suspended across the bar, hanging on the weakening winter light from the kitchen window. It's been a good day, spent cooking, cleaning and reading about hockey. It's winter, and it takes a steady current of coffee and hockey to get me from the October chill to the April arrival of optimism, the glimpse of a woman proudly parading a colorful new dress and the sound of children discovering free time in the park, no rules, no agenda, no coaches.

A cold winter makes you reflect, keeps you humble and challenges you to make your own sunshine amid the conditions and the relative negativity of others.

The Winter Classic and the World Junior Championship tournament have passed. Next is the Olympics and the National Hockey League's trade deadline, all signs that we are approaching the spring, when champions begin to reveal themselves with bold, confident steps forward.

Until then, I savor the memories of games well played and anticipate those to come. The winter sun is making its last call in the Lounge. The song is an old favorite; you have never looked better. And I have never felt warmer.
