I Just Want to Watch Olympic Hockey

Back in 1994, the Lillehammer Games didn't look so good to me. My daughters, now 25 and 21, were wearing footie PJs and rushing down to watch cartoons at the break of dawn on weekends.

As it would happen, I was living on the Pacific Coast and the 1994 gold medal game between Sweden and Canada was going head to head with the morning cartoons. The best TV in the house was locked up by the girls. I have the courage to do many things; looking the girls in their eyes and telling them their cartoons will have to go is not one of them.

So I grabbed a portable TV and picked up the game. No cable on this set. Just the airwaves. Black and white. Plenty of electronic snow. The YouTube clip posted above never looked so good, or so clear.

Those days are gone. The girls are grown up and off on their own, probably watching cartoons at all hours of the day. And that black and white portable is gone as well. It would be no good to me if I am looking at the Olympic men's hockey tournament schedule correctly.

You'll need cable or a satellite dish if you are living in the United States. NBC is of little value to you until the gold medal game comes around.

NBC's affiliated networks (Since when did one channel become a network? Just wondering.) USA, CNBC, MSNBC will carry the bulk of the men's hockey tournament, according to Puck the Media.

The preliminary round looks like this:
Tuesday, Feb. 16
United States/Switzerland -- 3 pm Eastern -- USA
Canada/Norway -- 8 pm -- CNBC
Russia/Latvia -- 12:30 am -- CNBC

Wednesday, Feb. 17
Finland/Belarus -- 3 pm -- MSNBC
Sweden/Germany -- 8 pm -- CNBC
Czech Republic/Slovakia -- 12:30 am -- CNBC

Canada/Switzerland -- 8 pm -- CNBC
Russia/Slovakia -- 12:30 am -- CNBC

Czech Republic/Latvia -- 8 -- CNBC

Belarus/Germany -- midnight -- MSNBC

Saturday, Feb. 21

According to Puck the Media, the viewing guide in Canada looks like this:

That schedule should stand up for the first round. That is, unless the coverage is interrupted by late breaking cartoons. Could happen.
