This Fan Is for Rent

This will be the first spring since I became a season-ticket holder of the Calgary Flames that I won’t be watching live playoff hockey. (It may not be the last spring, either, but that is a topic for another day.)

Without a team to root for in the playoffs, I have decided to declare myself a free-agent fan. Unrestricted, too. I’m looking for a team to root for this spring. It will be a short-term contract, lasting until the Stanley Cup final or whenever my newfound rooting interest is dispatched to the sideline. This deal will have a complete, no-movement clause: I won’t bail on my new club once I decide to support them.

I will consider teams from either conference but admit to being partial to Western teams since I see them so often each season.

So there it is. Do I back the Red Wings, the team of my wife? What about the Coyotes, surely the best playoff story out there? Or maybe the Habs, my brother’s team? My pal George B. would love it if I joined him in cheering for the Rangers but those guys have got to get in the derby first. I could align with Mark Pargas, my co-scribbler here (and really, the guy who does all the work), and back his Kings.

Anyway, I’m taking submissions. Make the case for your team and, if I like it, I’m right there with you.

  1. Back the Senators, just because I say so and this way I won't be as lonely here in Calgary. Plus, Karlsson is pretty awesome to watch develop.
