World Championships Start Friday

The United States will face host Germany in Gelsenkirchen on Friday to open the 2010 World Championships, which will see a strong contingent from Russia, which is trying to win this tournament for the third consecutive time.

Russia has added Alexander Ovechkin and Ilya Kovalchuk to its powerful lineup, which will be tested by Slovakia on Sunday. Besides these two, there are a number of players to keep an eye on during the tournament.

Official rosters will be posted in the Lounge once the preliminary round begins. For now, here is the schedule for the preliminary round, which except for the opening game will be contested in Cologne and Mannheim.

Group A comprises Russia, Belarus, Slovakia and Kazakhstan.

Group B comprises Canada, Switzerland, Latvia and Italy.

Group C comprises Sweden, Czech Republic, Norway and France.

Group D comprises Finland, United States, Germany and Denmark.
