Hmm. Live '30 Rock' or Senators/Wild/Panthers Hockey?

Things are going to get a little dicey around the Lounge as I try to watch a few games and also the live Eastern Time version of "30 Rock" on NBC.

On Oct. 1, I went to a talk with Alec Baldwin, which was part of The New Yorker magazine's annual festival, where the actor (A) showed either a lack of respect or, coming from a guy who grew up on Long Island, some keen sense of humor at the expense of the New York Rangers and (B) expressed some concern about which "30 Rock" actor -- you can venture a guess -- would jump the tracks during the live show.

Context on the Rangers slam/keen insight: He was talking about the controversy about the proposed mosque near Ground Zero and all the disapproval a group he was in received when they proposed a project that would have placed the new Yankee Stadium at Ground Zero.

No go on that one idea, which he said was slightly motivated by the idea that ONLY ONE major league team, the Knicks, played in the 212 area code. Except for my "oooooo," no one in the audience made any significant reaction. The reality? Either Rangers fans don't read, don't read The New Yorker or were too keen on keeping their money to drop some cash and hear this particular Long Island son talk.

"What's that Mr. No Cup Since 1983?" a typical erudite Rangers fan might inquire of Mr. Baldwin's brethren. "Coffee and a Lighthouse Project arena are for closers. WE CAN'T HEAR YOU. WE CAN'T HEAR YOU."

Good times. No word on when The Newarker or The Uniondaler will have their literary weekend festivals. Good luck with that.

Now about the tragedy that is/are the Ottawa Senators. The Universal Cynic blog paints a decidedly stark portrait of the situation in ol' OTT-A-WAH, what with some early losses and a growing number of empty seats.

Nothing like a little losing to test the bond of fans with their teams. Ottawa is not the only team in this boat. The Florida Panthers are not good right now, and new GM Dale Tallon cannot spend his way to the cap and beyond, the way he did in Chicago, to get the Panthers back in the hunt right now.

So I expect things to be tough there. But maybe Mr. Tallon gets some blank checks and goes crazy, knowing there may be another son of a legend who can come along and get the budget and cap situation back in order. Who knows?

And my third team in distress is the Minnesota Wild. Two games in Europe made me realize how much I don't want to watch them play in North America. But here they are tonight playing host to the Edmonton Oilers at 8:30 Eastern. That's the same time that "30 Rock" starts. You know my pick.

Here are the picks to click. The big screen in the Lounge gets the Lightning/Flyers game at 7 pm (Versus) and that stays on the big screen until "30 Rock." At 9, the Lightning/Flyers game returns to the big screen. Red Wings/Stars gets the play on the modestly sized HD monitor at 8:30 (Center Ice). The Blues/Predators will get some live look-ins on either screen and as for Hurricanes/Senators, Oilers/Wild and Panthers/Flames -- specifically Ottawa, Minnesota and Florida -- you get live Internet radio drop-ins until I change my mind about you. FX's "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and "The League" get DVR treatment.

Why no live look-ins for the Senators, Wild and Panthers? Here's Linda Ronstadt to tell them why.

A Few Clicks and Wednesday Is Set

Ah, Translator, how I enjoyed this tune over a few adult beverages and small group communications class notes back in college. The beer I remember. The tune I remember. Small group communications class? That mental file was not saved.

No loss.

Now, time for the picks to click. Nashville at Chicago, a rematch of a fine playoff series that almost went the way of the Predators. The game, at 8:30 Eastern, is on Center Ice, which does take me everywhere that I'm not.

So, Predlies and Hawks on the big screen in the Lounge. Tampa Bay at Montreal, 7:30 pm on Center Ice, goes on the modest sized HD monitor -- cannot miss Guy Boucher, who should be the coach of the Canadiens, bringing his Lightning into Montreal. Just imagine Boucher, who had success in juniors with Drummondville and in the AHL with Hamilton, as coach of the Canadiens. Knowing the coaching grinder that is Montreal, Boucher would be out of work in a year, but what a glorious year.

Not a lot of great audio there, but did you count how many cameras and reporters were there to talk to a coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning? When was the last time a coach of the Lightning drew that kind of crowd so early in the season? Just asking.

Now for the rest of the evening lineup. The small, non HD, auxilliary screen will be the flip-flop channel, shuttling me between the Devils/Sabres game (MSG-Plus) and the Isles/Capitals games (Versus). Both start at 7 pm.

Toronto at Pittsburgh, at 7:30 pm, gets Internet radio. (Toss-up on which radio feed to get. It's a lock that I will be able to pop popcorn on top of my laptop when ever the announcer heats up over a call. I say, for best popcorn results, the Lounge goes with the Toronto radio feed.)

Finally, the Canucks/Ducks telecast, Center Ice at 10 pm Eastern, gets the big play on the big screen when the Predlies and Hawks conclude their confrontation.

Still dragging myself through my duties after spending the early hours of Wednesday morning watching the Kings discover their offense in time to defeat the Atlanta Thrashers. About five hours later, it was a rapid run through the Avalanche/Red Wings game.

My eyes are rocking the red right now. Right on schedule. Your picks to click? (And your reasoning?) Pass them along.

The Islanders' James Wisniewski is suspended two games for his lewd gesture toward the Rangers' Sean Avery on Monday. A great number of hockey blogs are outraged that there was a suspension. Judging by the Maxim-esque level of reader comments, and blog posts that focus on the day-off antics of one NHL team's ice girls crew, you can imagine where the disconnect is regarding suspensions for classless acts.

A blog post hints at the hypocrisy of penalizing said acts when on-ice fighting is still allowed. OK, I can live without fighting. So what's your next card?

Seriously, I can expect any number of classless gestures from players at the lower levels (schoolboy, junior) because they are kids and they are still hopefully learning how to play the game and conduct themselves in a proper manner.

I draw the line at professionals -- and just think for a minute what that word implies -- who act like amateurs. And this from a guy who has thrown his share of tantrums or chairs. You learn or you go home. I have learned, and it is time for Wisniewski and for his fellow professionals to maintain a level of decorum that elevates their professional game above that of the house league or kids league game. (And it's not just hockey. Even in the newspaper/communications industry, there is a serious disconnect regarding professional standards.)

Am I worried about having to explain this to children. Seems like kids understand what this gesture and many of them mean. Seems like these kids also might expect that you cannot get away with these actions at work. So it comes down to adults: The "Jackass" movie franchise generation, or the disciples of Jean Béliveau, a class act and a champion.

As a wee piker of a kid, I saw Béliveau play and learned the definition of a professional. Perhaps more of the current class could use some time in Béliveau's company.

Late Night of Highs and Lows

I have to say that it is always great to hear Nick Nickson's voice come through the computer speakers to signal that it's time for hockey in Los Angeles. In another life, I was in Southern California and could not wait for Nickson to begin another Kings broadcast.

And now the low light. Slash played the "Star Spangled Banner" tonight. The man has skills, I'll give you that. But his performance cannot compare with what you get when you see what you get in Montreal, Detroit, Chicago or Philadelphia.

You don't a sustained roar from the crowd once the song is over. The rink gets quiet for the song, and then the joint is dead until things get interesting. Sounds more like a golf match, actually. That's not good for the home team.

Still, it's hockey in the Southland, and that works just fine for me, even though I am all the way across the country.

Few Words, Many Thoughts, One Pick to Click

A cold had me down for the count the last few days, but here is what we know now that I am back among the standing. Tuesday night is movie night, so I have to finally get in to see "The Town," followed by a quick sprint back home for my pick to click: Atlanta at Los Angeles (Center Ice package) at 10:30 pm Eastern. Colorado at Detroit gets a view on DVR replay (Versus) early Wednesday over corn flakes and extra strong Joe.

Still don't know what more can be said about the bush behavior of the Islanders' James Wisniewski. Would Gordie Howe have done that? Would Bobby Orr have done that? I don't care if it's the Rangers' Sean Avery on the receiving end, would someone with class have done that? No, and don't we deserve a little class these days?

You'd think that be an easy assignment these days, but with all the "heat of the moment" garbage being pushed around as excuses, you'd think Wisniewski was being witty or perhaps was even entitled to make such a stupid gesture. The world has grown more coarse and class just pulled out of the station without us.

Too bad for us, and for the sport that once featured Howe and Orr.

That's Salavat Yulaev's Alexander Radulov scoring in six seconds against Yugra, which won the game, 4-3. And you had to wait for it, but got to see the old stick roll celebration after the goal. That is remembered warmly in Quebec City, where Radulov played juniors for the Remparts.

And maybe, just maybe, it is remembered warmly as well in Nashville, where Radulov played with the Predators for a bit before skipping his contract WHA style to join Salavat in the KHL.

Buzzing the Net has the CHL's three stars and headlines from around the three leagues. Note that Buzzing the Net is taking the reporting of Willy Palov as fact regarding the score of the Montreal/Halifax game. But the box score indicates that Nicolas Chouinard scored four times in the first period and once in the second. The problem? The box score states Chouinard scored twice at 7:55 of the first period. That's tough to do. So it's four goals, which is still a good night for Chouinard.

Day 2: I'm Pickin' and a Clickin'

Well, if the horn hadn't sounded to announce that the game was over in Helsinki, I might have just fallen asleep at some point. Two Hurricanes/Wild games are in the books, that's the last we have to hear of those two together for the season.

And I am going bank on the fact that they will not reach the Stanley Cup finals together next June. It's a lock.

Carolina's 2-1 shootout victory means it's time for me to switch over to the Sharks/Blue Jackets Internet radio feed (we're going with the Sharks announcers on this one) while I am still in the office.

Tonight, things get a bit easier in the Lounge. Ilya Kovalchuk and his bankroll are in play at home as the Devils and Stars come together in perpetually beautiful downtown Newark. (Just forget what Philip Roth has written about that city over the last three decades.)

The Devils/Stars get the big HD screen in the Lounge (MSG Plus feed) starting at 7 pm Eastern.

The Ducks/Red Wings game goes on the modestly sized HD monitor (Center Ice) at 7:30. The Sabres/Senators game at 7:30 will be on the iMac (GameCenter Live feed) and the Capitals/Thrashers game gets Internet radio play on the laptop at 7:30.

I have a new way of monitoring all the scores. This season, my iPhone is using the NHL's GameCenter 2010 app, which gives me the score, shot locations, goals, hits and most everything else you can expect to find online at the GameCenter portion of NHL.com.

But with all my computers and TVs in play, the iPhone puts more controls in my hand. Forget which channel has what? Customize your TV listings on Zap2It.com by plugging in your ZIP code and your provider to get the channels. Then edit out the ones you don't expect to get hockey on. My Zap2It guide has NBC, MSG, MSG Plus, MSG Spillover, Versus, Center Ice package, NHL Network, ESPNU, CBS College Sports, Fox College Sports Pacific, Fox College Sports Central, Fox College Sports Atlantic and the Big Ten Network, all of which will carry either NHL, minor pro, junior or college hockey this season.

Wired up? You bet I am. Trust me, spend a little time with Zap2It and a few good smartphone apps, and your hockey experience will become that much more enjoyable.

And the cherry on top? It's the Bauer Goal Light app. It's simple, it's cool and it's free. Celebrate a goal anytime, and especially when it's against your buddy's favorite squad.

Feel free to thank me for this one any time.

Friday's Junior Spreadsheet

I cannot emphasize enough that the future stars of the National Hockey League are playing here almost every night. Teenagers, many of them living away from home, playing an NHL-style schedule riding buses, all dreaming of the big league, ready to do anything to get their shot.

The Buzzing the Net blog over at Yahoo Sports Canada is keeping track of the future stars. The Lounge will be checking in over there daily to bring back the three stars of the CHL (which comprises the QMJHL, OHL and WHL) and the notes from around the leagues.

In addition, the Lounge will be bringing notes and updates from the rinks around the USHL.

From Buzzing the Net, here are Thursday's three stars and the overnight notes from the CHL.

Friday's NHL Spreadsheet

The day after Day 1, and my eyes are beat. But what do I do when I get up in the morning? I go to my iPhone and fire up the NHL's Game Center app, which gives me the scores, news, stats and detailed recaps of every game.

I didn't have to wait until I got into the office to read the stories behind the game. No, I only had to get my phone out and read on the train ride in to work. Watched some game videos, too.

No, I don't wait for some newspaper to either ignore my sport or give me a sentence on each game because there needs to be more space for golf advances, profiles on the potential for leadership change at the international equestrian federation.

Don't waste my time. But for those who do cover hockey, you will get some change from my pocket, you know, for the effort. The New York Post: nice preview section on Tuesday. I may not agree with a third of what is written on the sports pages, but I know their guys are going into the corners every night.

Last night, the Avalanche came out with a youthful enthusiasm that makes you want to be a fan. They emptied the tank, which was pretty much their M.O. last season until they seemed to run out of gas late in the season. Still, Paul Stastny and Matt Duchene put on a show. Ditto Jordan Eberle, whose goal closes out the commentary portion of this spreadsheet and carries you onto the scores and Coach's Corner.

The NHL Season Has Begun

We have one game in the books, with Carolina defeating Minnesota, 4-3, in the opening game of the 2010-11 NHL season.

Too bad I had to be at work while the game was in play. Fortunately, Minnesota's Internet feed was easy to find, giving me some enjoyment while I plowed through an afternoon of work.

First impressions: Remember when the old Minnesota North Stars were really bad? Well I do and this edition of the Wild sound like the expansion team they were/it was 10 years ago. I hope I am wrong and this team finds its way, because the fans of Minnesota deserve more for the money they are paying.

Tonight, the picks to click are as follows: The Lounge will have the Canadiens/Maple Leafs game on the big HD screen (CBC feed from the Center Ice package) at 7 pm, with the Flyers/Penguins on the modestly sized HD monitor (Versus) at 7.

At 10 pm, the Blackhawks/Avalanche game (Versus) goes on the big screen while the Flames/Oilers nightcap (CBC feed from Center Ice Package) lands on the HD monitor.

And what do we do when the late games are done? We watch a replay of the Wild/Hurricanes game (Versus feed) courtesy the DVR. The cookies were baked last night. All the house chores are done. We're ready to drop the puck.
