The Friday Spreadsheet

After the initial experience on Twitter, one might say the service is more annoying than fun. You meet some interesting people with interesting views, and then you block them once they go from discussing (and I use that word losely) something you care about to selling you things or ideas you have no use for.

Fine. Just a part of a day on Twitter. But when the Maple Leafs happen to lose a game ... run for cover because Twitter is about to explode. Toronto is melting down. All hope is gone. Civilization as we know it is doomed.

But isn't this a kick in the head. You actually wake up the next morning and the world appears to be fine. At least, it's not doomed. But the Leafs watch continues each day, as if that team truly was the most important one in the NHL.

And just to spice things up on Twitter last night, a few reporters who apparently had no deadline to meet, were talking about the troubles of the Senators, Flames and Maple Leafs in tones that seemed to indicate the collapse of government and all that Canadians hold dear to themselves. Here's TSN's Bob McKenzie on Twitter:

Don't recall a time when things were messier in TOR, OTT and CGY at the same time. GMs looking to deal, coaches on hot seats, not pretty.

And here's an Ontario-centric view of the world from ESPN's Pierre LeBrun.

Leafs and Sens being shut out at home so far tonight... both coaches possibly on hot seat... Ugly times in the province of Ontario

James Mirtle, beat writer for The Globe and Mail, care to offer a tweet on the Leafs alone?

Booing in Toronto was louder than it's been in a long, long time. The "Fire Wilson" chant was fairly loud, too, at least near the press box.

So I get it. Things are bad. But Edmonton won, so something good came out of the evening. The Leafs may very well fire Ron Wilson one of these days. But I don't need the daily splat of 140-character bird droppings about doom in Toronto. I'm not surprised the Leafs are bad. For the most part, they have not been good since I was 6. The world did not end, the seas did not part, and the sky did not fall in. Heck, the Rangers even won the Cup in that period. But the sky did not fall in.

At least, I don't think it has. I better check Twitter for updates.

The Thursday Spreadsheet

Now, you must remember that I am not saying that Montreal's Mike Cammalleri is a quitter. But I will say that he did not help himself or his team when he first appeared to decide that avoiding contact with the Oilers' Dustin Penner was his best option in overtime.

And Cammalleri clearly seemed to decide, having surrendered the puck to Penner, that his best option was to take a Zamboni turn to get back into the play. Brutal. Carey Price, how does it feel to be on your own?

That was just one of the great games viewed in the Lounge last night. Watched Boston march in to Philadelphia last night and bounce the Flyers around. Johnny Boychuk played a man's game last night. If Cammelleri appeared to be allergic to physical contact last night, Boychuk showed that he was the Bruins' patient zero, his hitting style was so contagious. (As a matter of fact, the Flyers' Darroll Powe would show Boychuck just how inspiring his hitting was.)

Also enjoyed watching the Predators' Steve Sullivan completely fool the Blue Jackets' Steve Mason in the shootout session. OK, so Sullivan said told announcer Terry Crisp that it was tougher than it looked out there, but that only means we were fooled as well. So be it. Put two points on the Predators' side of the ledger.

We also caught bits of the Capitals/Blues and the Coyotes/Wild game before watching the Canucks light up the board in Calgary. Brutal performance by the Flames, who at times showed some interest in getting back into the game.

Watched the highlights of the Panthers/Ducks game. I'll see the Panthers tonight against the Los Angeles Kings; I cannot wait to see the Red Wings and Ducks on Friday night.

Yes, the Lounge is just getting warmed up. We'll save some seats for you.

The Shot: 11/30

The Los Angeles Kings have come back to the pack and the Detroit Red Wings are probably sitting in the seat at the bar that they plan to hold for the rest of the year, if not the regular season.

In the East, I like the way the Montreal Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers are barking at each other, on and off the ice. Now if only the Canadiens can keep their heads above water for the whole season. And how about Atlanta. No team has a bigger fan base than the Thrashers, that is, if you count the hands raised in Winnipeg, Hamilton and Quebec City.

Good things are fixing to come out of the kitchen in the next month or two. The world junior championships in Buffalo, the Winter Classic in Pittsburgh and the revived Heritage Classic in February, with the Calgary Flames as your host. The Canadiens will be playing in their second VERY COLD ONE, having played at Edmonton the last time the NHL held a winter picnic in Canada.

Here's the rewind from Monday night. Only the NHL was in action.

Old Chelios Has a New Story?

Maybe something was lost in translation.

On Wednesday morning, Chris Chelios was a between-periods radio guest on the Grand Rapids station that was broadcasting the AHL Griffins' road game against the Toronto Marlies.

He told the announcers that his playing career was done and that he would be focusing his attention on the his job with the Red Wings and on his two sons who are playing college hockey at Michigan State. But that game was in Canada. Perhaps something in the transmission was scrambled as it crossed the border.

Because this morning, TSN.ca is reporting that Chelios is negotiating with Vityaz of the KHL in Russia. Note that Vityaz plays a game more suited to the Charlestown Chiefs of the Federal League or an LNAH team in Quebec (LNAH leaders in penalty minutes, or meneurs punitions, if you please), what with the likes of Chris Simon and Darsy Verot (in North America, he was/is Darcy) running up penalty minutes like kilowatt hours at an electronics store. Look at this list. Can you tell me how many Vityaz players are in the top 15 in penalty minutes?

Sense a trend? Hmm, where is the team in the overall standings? Twenty-third. How many teams in the KHL? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Chelios told the Grand Rapids announcers that he saw how limited his skills were after a stint last season with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL and, for a brief time, the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers.

So, a listener of that interview will have a hard time envisioning Chelios back on the ice as a player. Even he made it sound as if a pylon would be the only on-ice job he could handle these days. A look at some 2009 video proves Chelios could still make some hits with the Wolves, so we'll consider some of his words as a form of modesty.

In short, Chelios may not be done yet. Maybe a Cheli's Chili Bar is in the offing overseas. We shall see.

About Last Night: 11/15

Hurry, hurry, hurry. Carolina is visiting Boston and that game is on the radio and TV now. The Lounge has a fresh pot of coffee going and the doughnuts are holding up until the turkey sandwiches are on the bar.

Three games at 1 Eastern, a game at 2 Eastern, one at 4 Eastern, one at 5 Eastern and more at 7, 7:30, 8:30 and 10 Eastern. The Lounge will be doing live look-ins, some more extended than others, while we also search the Web for radio feeds from the minors, the juniors and the NCAA ranks.

Busy day ahead. Football? Who has time to look? It's hockey season!

About Last Night: 11/24

The big bird is on the grill in back, smelling up the neighborhood, but in a good way. The Lounge is getting ready for a holiday feast, with plenty of fixings and some adult beverages.

Those bottles are looking pretty chilly out there on the deck. They'll be perfect when I bring them inside to warm up guests. No hockey until 9 pm Eastern, when the Colorado Avalanche visit the Edmonton Oilers. Here in New York, that game comes to us via the NHL Network.

Here, the skies are gray, probably a day that inspired this song from the Mommas and the Papas. I'll put quarter in the jukebox for you. Have a great day, and thanks for dropping in.

About Last Night: 11/13

There's nothing like a little morning hockey to make your day. As I write, the Grand Rapids Griffins are visiting the Toronto Marlies. An 11 am Eastern start, and that means those of you fortunate to be in the west, more hockey before lunch.

The Lounge is serving extra OJ and cookies as we prepare for the full night of hockey. And we're trying to kill off a cold, so the OJ is being consumed by the bucket right now.

I was feeling ill last night so I went to bed early, only to wake up around 1 am Eastern to watch the full replay of the Edmonton/Phoenix game on Center Ice. By 3:45, I was back in bed, thankful that I would not have have to endure the nightmares Oilers players, coaches and fans will have to endure after a thoroughly disappointing game against the Coyotes.

Scary stuff, sports fans. I sensed that Count Floyd was around the corner.

One Game Is Never Enough

Well the pick to click is pretty much limited to Edmonton at Phoenix (9 pm Eastern, Center Ice), but the Lounge will be going to the Internet work a little radio magic tonight.

Two games in the AHL, two in the ECHL, two in the QMJHL, five in the WHL and six NCAA Division I games. There has to be some radio action out there.

It's movie night, so the lone NHL game will be a nice treat when I get back from the show. Just to keep me company, I will hunt for some audio from the western regions. That makes the Edmonton Oil Kings/Calgary Hitmen game a possibility, along with the Regina Pats/Kamloops Blazers game.

One way or another, I'm looking for hockey radar love out there tonight. For now, I'm putting two bits on Golden Earring. What are you having?

About Last Night: 11/22

Too many games all at once last night. I should have such problems every night. Seriously, people may talk about the old days and how hockey was so much better in the old days.

But not in the Lounge. Hockey today is faster and is much more fun to watch. I remember the early days of the Original 12 and how you could count having a handful of bad games each night. And watching the replays of those games today, you can see how today's players are, by comparison, in better shape, can skate better and come charging at one another at dangerously high speeds. Now if only they could do something about those flimsy sticks.

And today's game lacks the brutality of the old game, which is to be applauded. I watched a replay of the Manny Pacquiao/Antonio Margarito fight last night after all the games on ice were done. Now that was brutality.

The game on ice is fine. Sure we can continue to complain. That's what hockey fans and the those who cover the game do, have done, were born to do. But the game today is not like the wrestling on ice we had years ago, or the rodeo on ice we had before the lockout.

At least, that's the call at this end of the bar here in the Lounge. More later.

About Last Night: 11/19

The events off the ice yesterday overshadowed the actions on the ice as far as the Lounge is concerned. Pat Burns, a coach who found success in the juniors and in the National Hockey League, died yesterday of cancer.

Burns led the Hull Olympiques to the championship of the QMJHL and then coached briefly in the AHL before reaching the NHL, coaching at Montreal, Toronto, New Jersey and Boston. He won the Stanley Cup with the Devils in 2003. Here is the NHL's tribute on its Web site.

It's Friday. Pass the Clicker.

There is so much hockey on the grid and I have only so much time, patience and attention span to cover what will be a busy night.

It's college night on the Lounge's Big Screen, which will have Minnesota-Duluth at Wisconsin (Fox College Sports Central) at 8 pm Eastern. As soon as that game finishes, the Big Screen will join the Bemidji State at Denver (Fox College Sports Atlantic), which starts at 9:30 Eastern. A live college look-in coverage on the Big Screen will be Yale at Cornell (CBS College Sports), which starts at 7:30 Eastern.

On the modestly sized HD monitor, the Lounge will feature Los Angeles at Buffalo (Center Ice) at 7:30 Eastern. Once the Kings and Sabres wrap things up, the HD monitor will switch the focus to Chicago at Calgary (Center Ice). That game starts at 9:30 Eastern.

The N.Y. Rangers/Colorado game lands on the low definition CRT set (MSG Plus). That game starts at 9 Eastern.

What's left? Live look-ins on the the HD monitor for Carolina/Pittsburgh, Minnesota/Detroit, Washington/Atlanta, Ottawa/St. Louis, Phoenix/Edmonton and Columbus/Anaheim.

Internet radio? We'll the Lounge is going to try and see what we can find regarding the juniors and AHL tonight? In the OHL, Kingston at Kitchener is one we'll be searching for. The matchup between Lewiston and Quebec is on the must list for the QMJHL. Out in the WHL, Saskatoon at Kootenay will draw our interest. In the USHL, Dubuque at Muskegon makes the list.

Whether we find any or all of these games is not known at this time, which makes tonight's search all that more interesting.

At the bar is the usual selection of beverages. And from the kitchen, I'd say you better try the green chile tamales, chips and salsa. Why? Because it's my kitchen and I say they will fire you up and keep you warm all night.

Now let's get ready for hockey. Limber up to this little treat from when I was a young lad.

Here's "Suavecito" by Malo. Thanks for stopping by.

About Last Night: 11/18

The Tampa Bay at Philadelphia game was truly the right call on Thursday night. Reminded of old Edmonton/Chicago or Edmonton/Winnipeg (when the Jets had that brief flash of Dale Hawerchuk surrounded by some talented skaters) games where your head swiveled like you were playing video Pong.

End-to-end action, an 8-7 victory by the Lightning and five-point nights for Steven Stamkos (three goals) and Martin St. Louis.

And while the Big Screen in the Lounge was on fire, the modestly sized HD monitor had all the early big hits between Nashville and Montreal. Those two teams may not know each other, but now they may not like each other the next time they meet.

And watch Marcel Goc score his final goal of the night for the Predators in a 3-0 victory. Did the Red Sea part? Doesn't matter. Goc put a little salt in the wound for the Canadiens fans, who on Tuesday night were roaring for Carey Price and his efforts in a 3-0 victory over the Flyers.

Last night, it was Pekka Rinne who deserved the cheers. Actually, all the games were entertaining. Throw in some frosty adult beverages and my creation of a flame-broiled burger with pastrami, dijon mustard, raw onion slices, lettuce and a little cole slaw and I wound up with a tasty product all around. Perhaps messy all around, but well worth the effort.

More later.

Quick Picks to Click

Tampa Bay at Philadephia, anyone? That's the Big Screen game, at 7 pm on the NHL Network. Nashville at Montreal goes on the modestly sized HD monitor (7:30 Eastern, Center Ice). The low definition CRT model gets New Jersey at Toronto (7 Eastern, MSG Plus) only because I can put a local game on the menu.

Florida at Boston (7 Eastern) is another Internet radio game (Florida feed). San Jose at Dallas (8:30 Eastern, Center Ice) will get live look-ins until the Lightning/Flyers game is over. After that, the Sharks and Stars will graduate to the Big Screen.

Firing up the grill tonight. Still seasonally warm in New York. At least, it's not freezing or raining yet. Burgers flamed to order. A hunk of burning love. Get yours in now.

More later. Thanks for stopping by. Take it away, Elvis.

About Last Night: 11/17

Well, it looks like the Los Angeles Kings' penalty kill is still holding up at home. But Columbus spoiled the Kings' run at home with a 5-3 victory. Sooooo, we shall see if the Kings can live up to their raised expectations as they make their way east.

Now here's a new thought. The Oilers are jinxed. At least Edmonton is falling apart. Please put Nikolai Khabibulin back on the injured list, according to TSN.

A groin injury has placed Khabibulin on the injured reserve list, where he can rest and recover while his various replacements try to keep the pucks, and there have been many, out of the net.

I'm working on my picks to click. Perhaps I can consult with Khabby. He has some time on his hands. (For what it's worth, the uniforms the Oilers wore last night are the ones that should be the primary home uniform, not the bland blue or, for that matter, the bland glacier white ones as the road jerseys.)

About Last Night: 11/16

Do you trust your political leaders? Do you trust business leaders? Now, and here is the big question for today, do you trust either of the above group to always be their public selves when they send private e-mail messages to each other?

The public debate about Colin Campbell and his e-mailed complaints (or jokes?) to a director of officiating leaves me wondering whether we have truly lost sense of how the world operates today.

I'm not talking about how the world should run today. Take two business executives. Put a pile of cash in front of them and say it is there for the taking. The smart executive negotiates a plan to split the pile. Once the agreement is reached, that executive then dashes to pick up the cash (as stated in the agreement) and points out that the entire pile is now belongs to him/her. You don't like it? See you in court.

Sad, but true.

Same goes for e-mail. Once an executive gets past the initial training -- How does this work? -- and the initial skepticism -- Why do I need to know this? I'll never use it -- that person takes a slow yet steady approach to where we are now.

First you send short messages. Then some forwards. Then some chain mailings. Then you begin to feel like a sports columnist, firing off snarky little remarks that are, between you and me, to be kept between you and me.

Then you get mad. And that is where the private side comes into play. I will flame this person, but it's between you and me. It's wrong, we can both agree on that, but you do it anyway. And when this conversation or practice blows up, defense mechanisms go into action.

Feel bad, call it a joke, call a lawyer, whatever. It happened, now deal with it. But don't act surprised that this happens. Ray Ratto, who once was the reason for this graveyard shift editor to get up around noon to pick up that morning's edition of the San Francisco Chronicle, expresses some shock.

But I say it's misplaced. Again, are we surprised? Really? I would be surprised if this only happened in the NHL. So let us take a deep breath and redirect some questioning in this direction of Stephen Walkom and Dean Warren, the other two players in this situation, have to say? Let's have someone take this to court and get a proper airing. That would be best for all. Seriously, Campbell's firing or resignation would only be window dressing. A public hanging that does not solve the problem. (Elliotte Friedman of the CBC touches on this and a bigger issue in his blog post.) And the business world has a big problem that we are not even close to touching.

I consider this just another day and another business. (Such conflicts of interest should be considered wrong, as Friedman suggests in an earlier blog post, but I assure you they are taking place as I write this.) See those skyscrapers? They have elevators. Inside them, executives are talking. They may be ready to eliminate your job, or cut up another pile of money, perhaps at your expense. (Ask Ratto how that joint operating agreement between the Chronicle and the San Francisco Examiner worked out. While your at it, ask him when did he finally figure out the fix was in for one or both of those newspapers.) Or they may be quickly sending a text message that locks in a spot at an exclusive school for their undeserving son or daughter, effectively blocking your deserving son or daughter from landing a seat and getting a shot at a better life. Connections beat merit? Say it isn't so.

Those are my two cents, anyway. But keep it between you and me, OK?
