Pick to Click After the Movie

Yes, it's Movie Night, which means Anaheim at Dallas (9 pm Eastern, Center Ice) gets the call. The Stars took on some bruises last week in Southern California, losing to both the Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks.

Let's see if there is some manner of payback on the table for the Stars, who are 13th overall in the Western Conference. It's also a battle of some pretty unimaginative uniforms. Dallas has reached the pinnacle of boring, having successfully removed nearly all the traces of green from its home black uniform.

Placing Dallas on the front of your uniform just says bush league to me. I'm only going to mention briefly how brilliant the old North Stars logo and colors used to look on the screen. These Dallas uniforms? Trash. I don't need a cartoon logo, either. Just a traditional crest and some color on those uniforms.

The Ducks? Well it looks as if they took their clothing cues from the San Diego Padres of the 1980s. They're great if you are handing out hot dogs at Der Wienerschnitzel, but not for baseball and definitely not for hockey.

Almost makes me long for the mighty men of jade and eggplant uniforms. I said almost.

Thanks for stopping by.

Breaking Up Is Hard to Do

I said I was going to quit doing this. I put away my legal pad and decided not to have anything beside me when I started to look up who won last night in the juniors.

Not to far along in this process, I looked for a pad to scribble some scores, notes to myself, I said. And the next thing I new, I was back in my daily relationship with hockey agate. I cannot give it up.

Part of it is trying to keep track of who is where, in terms of prospects and suspects. And it's just another passion that has moved from print to digital. Getting up and checking out the box scores.

Just like many of you, I learned as a child that this was the morning ritual of adults who went out and made sure the bills were paid. My father left for his job at the slaughterhouse at 6 am. My mother left for her job at the fishhook plant at 6:45. After that, it was just me, my Rose Bowl of cereal, Hughes Rudd on the CBS Morning News, the radio and the agate pages of the Rocky Mountain News.

Hughes Rudd (and, for a very short time, his partner Sally Quinn) on TV would eventually give way to rock-n-roll on AM 950 KIMN out of Denver. I had solid block of time for music, weather and my sports page to get me ready for the morning commute, an 16-block walk to Franklin Elementary. School started at 9 am. Plenty of time.

The music/sports cocktail had me ready for the day. So what if the teachers at Franklin were there to beat down my spirit, feed me with facts that now smell particularly fishy, and then send me back home with a note saying: Mark thinks he knows more than the teacher, Mark talks to much about sports and rock music, blah, blah, blah.

My mother would give me a worried look. My father would give me an angry look -- as long as my mother was in the room. Once she left, my dad would ask me what we were covering in school and then tell me why my behavior report from school told him I was headed down the right road, albeit a more bumpy one.

He's still right about that. It's been worth the trip. My relationship with sports agate was established way back. I guess I shouldn't turn my back on it now.

Monday's Coffee and Cornflakes

This is the end of the line for the daily spreadsheet, which has helped me keep track of the top level of hockey, along with the top level of minors, juniors and college hockey.

But the time spent typing it all in perhaps could be better spent writing about what I am seeing either in person or on television, or reading between the lines in all this agate.

So, savor this last bit of the morning spreadsheet. Instead, I will be linking to scoreboards and roundups, so you can still find the scores, standings and roundups. And with that, here is the final spreadsheet, covering all the action from Sunday on the ice.

The Clicker Goes Back to School

We're headed to Madison tonight. At least, the Big Screen in the Lounge will be our window to the world of college hockey, as North Dakota faces Wisconsin tonight at 8 pm (Eastern) on Fox College Sports Central. (On YouTube is any number of entries featuring footage of the gentlemanly art of airing of grievances: Badger-Sioux style.)

Here at the Lounge, in addition to the local New York sports channels, the NHL Network and the NHL Center Ice package, gets Versus for a full-metal jacket of NHL. The Lounge also gets Fox College Sports (Pacific, Central and Atlantic channels), CBS College Sports and ESPNU, all of which means college hockey and some high school games from Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Tonight, the pick to click is the match with two Top-15 programs, both from the far superior Western Collegiate Hockey Association. (You must remember, I grew up in Denver Pioneer country, so the WCHA is THE league to me.) There's a lot of history and a lot of issues between the two programs. There will be contact tonight. Guaranteed.

The modestly sized HD monitor will draw the Colorado Avalanche/Columbus Blue Jackets game (7 pm Eastern, Center Ice). Calgary Flames/Phoenix Coyotes (9 pm Eastern, Center Ice) will be joined in progress on the Big Screen.

Dallas Stars at Anaheim Ducks (10 pm Eastern, Center Ice) gets the modestly sized HD monitor. The rest of the NHL gets live look-ins.

Friday's Coffee and Cornflakes

The Stanley Cup is not won in November. Teams may look great, but they still have to put on a lot more mileage before they can stand in line to lift the Cup.

So, just on pure entertainment value, last night was a winner. Plenty of issues and aggression in the Dallas/Los Angeles game. The Canadiens withstood a challenge to defeat the Bruins in Boston. These games go a long way toward building character, but only as long as these characters remain healthy and in the lineup.

Teams are starting to look at their injury reports -- the real ones, not the ones that just say upper- or lower-body injury -- and say, "No more, please."

The St. Louis Blues are busted up like old lawn furniture. The Kings are a few unfortunate hits away from needing help. There is plenty of time for a number of teams to close the gap on the leaders.

But for others -- Oilers and Islanders, please stand up -- you have all the time in the world this season. Your run for the Cup does not begin for a few more years, at least.

For those with time on their hands, I give you the spreadsheet for Thursday night on the ice.
